Dental Examination

A detailed dental examination is the cornerstone of any dental treatment plan. All our patients will receive a thorough examination of teeth, gums and surrounding tissues. Regular dental check ups are important for maintaining your oral health and to allow us to detect and address any dental problems at an early stage, or to plan more complex treatments. Dental X-rays may be required as part of your examination as they are the most common diagnostic tool to provide us with more information about your teeth and supporting structures. We use state of the art digital dental radiography. We generally recommended having a dental check up every 6 months or at an interval advised by your dentist.

Dental Hygiene

At Lakelands dental we do not like the term “tooth cleaning” as dental hygiene appointments are much more than that. Regular visits to our Hygienists will not only help you to keep a beautiful smile but also improve your dental health, prevent or control periodontal (gum) disease, reduce bleeding gums, bad breath and dental decay. Many medical conditions have a knock on effect on our dental health such as Diabetes, kidney disease or medications that have an effect on saliva production and these effects need to be managed. Our team of Hygienists will advise you on how to clean your teeth properly, help you to clean those difficult to reach areas and advise you on what oral health products are best suited to your particular needs.

If your teeth are particularly sensitive local anaesthetic can be provided prior to seeing the hygienist to make the appointment as comfortable as possible. Prevention is a key part of the process and we are here to discuss any concerns you may have and offer advice on diet, smoking cessation and your daily oral health needs.

Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease, otherwise known as gum disease is a more serious condition affecting the attaching fibres and supporting bone around your teeth, and may, if left untreated result in tooth loss. Every patient is screened for periodontal disease as part of their examination. Periodontal disease, depending on its severity may require more a course of intensive treatment. Each case will be assessed by the dentist and an individual treatment plan made and carried out by the dentist often in conjunction with the hygienist.

Children's Dentistry

We believe the key to a good oral health for you child is laying the foundations from a young age. We encourage establishing a clear oral hygiene routine for parents and their children to follow, good diet habits and regular dental visits to avoid any dental problems. Regular dental check ups for children are so vitally important to allow for early detection of dental problems and avoid the possibility of toothache, which can have detrimental effect on your child’s attitude to his/her oral health in the long term. We treat children of all ages and will always strive to make your child’s visit to us as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.

Root Canal Treatment

Root Canal treatment may be required to save a tooth when the infection of the tooth has reached the pulp (soft tissue in the middle of your tooth) and is too deep for a filling to resolve. Root Canal treatment is typically carried out over out over two or more appointments and may be carried out by your dentist or by a root canal specialist. Local Anaesthetic is used to numb the surrounding area to ensure a pain free treatment. In most cases a white filling or a Crown is placed after to restore the tooth after treatment.

Extractions

Tooth removal is never a pleasant experience but unfortunately there are times when we cannot restore a tooth to its natural form and extraction is the only option. This may be due to a large amount of tooth decay, infection, severe gum disease or a very badly broken or cracked tooth. Extractions may also be planned as part of an overall treatment plan in order to prepare for placement of implants, bridges, orthodontic treatment (braces) or provision of dentures. For our more anxious patients we can offer sedation in order to make the procedure less daunting. We will always discuss tooth removal with you and prepare you as best as possible for the procedure in order to make you as comfortable as possible.

Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment with a specialist remains the gold standard for straightening teeth today. We work closely with our local orthodontic specialist Dr Chye in Orthopoint to ensure you get the best possible care, carried out by those most highly trained in this field. Seeing a specialist orthodontist reduces the risk of your treatment time becoming longer unexpectedly and reduces the risk of relapse (teeth moving back into their original position) over your lifetime. We will arrange referral to Dr Chye at an appropriate time in your dental development and work closely with Dr Chye to ensure a multi-disciplinary approach to your care.

Implants

A dental implant is a permanent replacement for a missing tooth. Dental implants can be used to support a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth or can provide support for your denture increasing its stability in the mouth. An implant is an artificial titanium screw that is placed in the jaw bone where your natural root used to be. This procedure is carried out by an implant specialist. This titanium screw then anchors the crown, bridge or denture, which is planned and made by us in Lakelands dental. We work closely with the implant specialist in this regard in planning the position and type of implant to be placed to ensure you get the best possible result. Dental implants are considered the gold standard for replacing missing teeth today.

Sedation

We will always strive to deliver our care in a painless and comfortable manner. For most patients this can be achieved with effective use of local anaesthetic in combination with care and understanding from our dental support team. We have years of experience in treating nervous patients and often we can overcome this phobia by completing treatment in relaxed step by step approach, slowly overcoming the patients fear. However, for those patients who are particularly anxious and cannot tolerate treatment delivered in this manner, sedation is a fantastic adjunct to allow us to complete your treatment. The use of sedation has made dental treatment more accessible to those who would otherwise have avoided treatment.

Teeth Whitening

Whitening your teeth is a simple and non invasive treatment that can have a profound impact on your smile. It is a gradual process that will brightening stained, discoloured or dull looking teeth. Extrinsic stains (stains on the outside) of teeth can often be resolved with good oral hygiene measures and regular dental hygiene appointments however teeth will also become intrsinsically (on the inside) more yellow with age. Whitening your teeth is a great way to resolve this natural change in tooth colour keeping your smile bright and white. There are many ways of whitening your teeth but in Lakelands dental we are using the method with the most proven long term and predictable results. We recommend the use of a customised home professional whitening kit. This gives you a safe and reliable way to whiten your teeth and allows you to maintain this in a cost effective way for years to come.

Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic bonding is a conservative treatment that involves the addition of tooth coloured filling material to your teeth in a safe and non damaging way. This treatment is often used to change the shape of the teeth, to close unwanted gaps between teeth or to mask natural marks or staining on the teeth.

Porcelain Fillings

Porcelain fillings are often recommended if a tooth is particularly damaged or very weak as they can offer more strength in comparison to composite resin fillings. These fillings are made in a laboratory after an impression of your tooth is taken and are called inlays or onlays.

Crowns

A Crown is a full coverage protection around your natural tooth or over an implant. Crowns restore teeth that have been badly damaged, broken or are at risk of breaking and can also greatly improve the appearance of your tooth. Crowns can be made from various materials, such as reinforced porcelain or a combination of porcelain and metal. Porcelain crowns are normally more popular with our patients as they typically provide the most natural looking result. We recommend a crown for any root canal treated tooth to protect it.

Veneers

Veneers are a custom made thin shell of porcelain (tooth coloured material) that is made to fit precisely over the front surface of the tooth. Veneers may be used to improve the shape, colour, size or length of the tooth underneath that may be worn, badly chipped, permanently discoloured or uneven in shape. Sometimes we may be able to use less invasive methods of achieving your desired result with cosmetic bonding, tooth whitening or cosmetic braces so it is important to have a thorough examination and initial assessment to decide on the best course of treatment for you.
